How does QUINKO’s Valve Work ?

Colour Diagram - Copy

Introducing our new valve design specifically developed for kitesurfing/kiteboarding  kites.

Fitment requires that the internal valve components are inserted through the hole in which they seal. This is achieved by using our unique 2-piece composite backing disc (1).

The valve stem (2) and nut (3) create a clamping force across the kite’s bladder between and the other valve components.

The silicone rubber grommets which create an airtight seal (4 & 5) conform to make the whole system impermeable.

The 2-piece disc (1) has no need to be screwed together, it’s unique design in which both pieces contribute greater than 180 degrees to the center the placement of  ( 2 & 4) retain their position.

1.     Hex key 2.0mm and 1.5mm found in most hex key sets

2.     Tear-Aid ( For either pre-existing or Incidental holes)

3.     Scissors

4. Zip/Cable ties (small)

Can the valve be fitted directly to the bladder?

Valve cut

Yes, you can either leave or remove the old valve base.

Valve removed.png

What size hole does this valve cover? The diameter of the valve is 32mm, so it can be installed over holes Minimum of 16mm and a Maximum of ~25mm.
How much do the valves weigh? The valves each weigh 25g.
Will these valves add weight to my kite?
DDDDD
Ok let’s work this out.

Each valve has a mass of 25g each hose weighs 4g:

(25g+4g) *10 = 290g = A

I installed a set on a 9m kite that I own to install the following were removed from the kite:

– piece of valve (cut away)

– hose adapter

– Circle thing above valve

– Old hose (12g)

(see picture)

This lot had a mass of (18g+12g)  * 10 = 300g = B

So this kite is 10g (A-B) lighter than the factory made it.

Depending on how your valves are set up components that you remove may weigh more or less than my personal experience.

Which valves on my kite can this replace? The valve was specifically designed for replacing both strut and leading edge valves on kites fitted with one-pump systems, however, can also replace older style inflation and deflations valves see HERE FOR MORE DETAILS
Will this valve work with my current kites hoses? Yes, although there is variation in hose diameter on different brand kites, the current valves have a 5mm OD stem and therefore the best hose is 4mm ID hose. However, if you first fit a 1 cm stub of this hose over the valve stem it is the appropriate diameter for most standard hoses. Click here for details.

Ultimately each valve pair (LE and strut) should be changed together, or all valves on the kite at once. However, if you are replacing a single leaking valve the above method is appropriate.

With each valve purchase, a 20cm per valve pair – of 4mm ID silicone hose is included.

QUINKO valves can now be used as an Inflate/Deflate valve, extending their application to include older kites that are not fitted with a one-pump system. The following images show fitment to an older style Best Waroo.

MOST IMPORTANT: You will need to have a pump nozzle similar to the one shown in the image below, this small diameter nozzle is required given that the diameter of the hose is 4mm. So check your pump.

QUINKO’s Kitesurfing replacement valves are specifically designed to replace all standard 9 mm valves that are fitted to a range of kites. They however have the potential to replace a whole lot more if you can cut the old valve leaving a hole 20-25mm this valve can then be fitted. This article is designed to assist you to judge their suitability to your kite.

With a diameter of 32mm, sealing a hole typically 20mm (although the smallest hole you can insert the valve through is 15mm !), this valve is highly suited to replacing all of the one pump hose valves on both struts and on the leading edge. With it’s simple design that inserts through to hole left after removing the old valve. Chop

On kites which utilize this valve for their one-pump system they typically have a plastic retainer and neoprene boot that lock the hose into position. These items are removed along with the part shown in the picture above. These parts that are removed are of a similar weight to QUINKO’s valves. Considering that people strap GoPro Cameras to their kites with no detriment to performance any added weight would be of little consequence.

Simply cut out the stem part of the old valve. You don’t have to get carried away and cut the entire valve out like you do when replacing conventional stick on valves although if you have already this valve will still work. You will notice in the picture above there was a small pin hole identified beside the old valve and there are some salt crystals visible inside the bladder from when the kite deflated in the water from the old valves and was left in storage.

Both the domed nut and black disc seen in the images are fitted outside the kite’s outer RipStop polyester which is a material made using a special reinforcing technique that makes them resistant to tearing and ripping. Therefor the valve is well supported and does not put stress on the PU internal bladder.

20151206_232152

The valve is made of aluminum – anodized for marine use, silicone rubber – seals and thermoplastics. Unlike conventional valves which use glues, PVC and adhesives, this valve will not perish with age or the conditions inherent to the sport.

How to fix leaking valves kite/ kitesurfing / kiteboarding

When traction kites are manufactured the valves are either thermally bonded or attached using adhesives. As your kite ages the probability that you will have valve issues increases. This is made even more likely if you travel with a quiver of kites and thus the kites you are not using are exposed to the heat of your parked car. This causes de-lamination of the valves and they subsequently peel off of the bladder.

Many people try different methods of fixing valves including gluing them back on using Tear-Aid patches often to no avail. You spend hours toiling over your kite only to have it fail on the first inflation. And to have a similar mess to the one depicted in the picture below.

20151010_234932.jpg

With QUINKO’s new valve this is easily amenable. Simply cut off the external portion of the valve that is protruding from the bladder…

20150725_000610

And install the new valve over the top. The internal valve backing disc is inserted through this hole and assembled inside. Inflate the bladders before installing them to ensure they stay hard. Using the one pump hoses and occluders can assist with this process.

QUINKO provides a far simpler option for power kite valve replacement. Re-instilling your confidence in your equipment.

A Universal Kitesurf Valve ?

Replacing valves on a kite surfing kite can be a troublesome experience, so why not just do it once ? The following design utilizes a 2-piece disc, which is inserted through the valve hole and assembled therein. This disc is the key to the elegant yet simple design.

Fidel82373
Disc formed from 2 identical pieces.

As the center of each portion of the disc is >180 degrees no screws are required in assembly. The disc is held together by having the stem inserted through the middle. Assembly is also quite easy and the pieces snap together around a silicone rubber center.

Colour Diagram.png

The Polyurethane inner bladder material (and valve remnant after cutting off the stem, which can also be removed if you choose to) is sandwiched between the two silicone pieces then sealed with purely applied pressure established by the nut and valve stem thread, this creates an airtight seal that will outlast the kite itself.

Chop

Lot’s of valves on a variety of brands kites are able to be replaced with this design. It is ideal for replacing the connection between leading edge and strut in one-pump systems.
